 Ultraconductive copper-carbon nanotube wire: enhancing electrical performance, achieving processing reproducibility, and ensuring stability.


The aim of this project is to develop novel materials for lighter and more stable electrical wires which would improve the energy efficiency and safety of operation of the present electrical grid, and enhance the fuel efficiency of vehicles. The materials in question are compounds of copper and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) collectively referred as to ultraconductive copper (UCC).

  1. To develop advanced ultraconductive composite materials of copper and CNT, UCC, with enhanced electrical properties.

The novelty: CNTs will be pre-functionalised and subsequently modified with copper nanoclusters to achieve better metal-carbon contact and electrical performance.

  1. To ensure stability of UCC performance.

UCC’s long-term stability which will not degrade with time under practical conditions is of critical need.

  1. To achieve reproducible processing of UCC wires in order to facilitate scalability of production.

Wide range of methods employed in synthesis and sample measurement will be revised to determine the optimum and most robust route for fabrication of UCC wires.
